Venice Facts

By Car

On highways A4 from west or east, A13 until you reach Padova and then A4 from the South, or A27 from the North. When you arrive at Piazzale Roma you can leave your car in one of the car parks, or go to the big car park of Tronchetto island. From Tronchetto you can reach Venice by
Vaporetto n° 3 (only in the morning) and n° 4 (only in the afternoon). Otherwise you can take a ferry boat (line n° 17) from Tronchetto to the Lido. An alternative is to leave your car in Mestre. There are both open and covered parking directly in front of the train station and they cost a fraction of what it costs to leave your car in Venice. You can then reach Venice by train (departure every 5-10 minutes) or by numerous buses.

By Train
S.Lucia (Santa Lucia) is the name of Venice's Train Station. If you get off in Mestre, Venice then you haven't reached Venice yet. You must first cross the Liberty Bridge and Venice is the end of the line. S.Lucia Train Station is located in the
sestiere of Cannaregio. The public transortation, called Vaporetto, has stops for lines n° 1 and n° 52 (to your right as you leave the station) and n° 82 (to your left as you leave the station) on the Grand Canal.

By Plane

The Marco Polo airport, located about 13 km from Venice, is connected to the city by bus n° 5 (departures at intervals of every half hour), by airport shuttle (faster but more expensive, leaving every hour), and by taxi.

By Boat
The Cruise Ship terminal is located at the Port of Venice - Maritime Station in S.Marta. Cruise Ships offer free shuttle boat service from their dock to Piazza San Marco.

The only way to get around In Venice is to walk or take a boat. Many Venetians have their own boats but the visitor to Venice will have to rely on Taxis and the public boats, which is run by the ACTV and are used to move around the canals of Venice and the lagoon. The different types of public boats are: vaporetto, motoscafo and motonave. These boats are used by the Venetians and visitors to Venice to reach all the main parts of the city, the main islands of the lagoon (Lido of Venice, Murano, Burano, Torcello, the Giudecca) and the mainland.

For further information about services you can telephone the ACTV Main Office.
The famous gondola is unquestionably the finest way to move about the canals of Venice on romantic moonlite nights. You can easily find a gondola at one of the many landing-places (for further information you can call the telephone numbers of the different landing-places). The fares are estabilished: for max 5 people you should pay about 70.000 lire for 45 minutes and 40.000 lire for further 30 minutes, 80.000 lire by night, but it can vary according to how many people for gondola. However it is a good idea to establish the fares before starting the tour. If you want to feel the emotion of having a gondola trip for 600 lire you can go to one of the seven "traghetti" (ferries) working in Venice: you will be carried you from one side of The Grand Canal to the other: the "traghetti" are often used by the Venetians.

Finally you can take a taxi; the fares start from 27.000 lire and then you have to pay 450 lire for each additional 15 seconds. You have to be very careful, above all in Tronchetto (the island with the biggest car park), unlicensed taxi drivers or car parker attendents who quote "personal" fares are not to be trusted (and sometimes they can be dangerous too!).
